MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE! šŸ‘ Great to see this MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE! šŸ‘

Great to see this beautiful boy’s eye looking nice and comfy again!

In October last year, what first appeared to be a simple and straightforward corneal ulcer failed to respond to initial routine treatment and turned nasty. This gelding required hospitalisation and aggressive topical treatment through an in dwelling eye lavage tube. In the face of this intensive treatment, the ulcer progressed into a corneal stromal abscess! When the lavage tube was removed and he was discharged from hospital, he still required lots of TLC and weeks of topical eye treatment at home until the abscess eventually resolved.

It’s fantastic to see everyone’s hard work has paid off, and other than a small scar, the eye is pretty much normal again šŸ‘

Routinely taking your horse’s temperature is one Routinely taking your horse’s temperature is one of the best ways to monitor their health. It is important to establish a normal average for your horse to detect any problems nice and early before they become serious.

🐓The best way to take a horse’s temperature is rectally with a digital thermometer. A standard digital human thermometer is used and these can be purchased from your local pharmacy or supermarket.

🐓All horses should learn to stand quietly for the procedure from an early age.
🐓 If your horse is young, or if you don’t know them very well yet, or if taking the temperature is new to the horse, make sure to get someone to hold onto them. Remember YOUR SAFETY is paramount!

🐓Stand on the near side, close to your horse’s hindquarters and facing the tail. Using your arm that’s closest to the horse, gently grasp the top of the tail and lift it up.
🐓Gently insert the thermometer about half the length into the horse’s rectum.
🐓Make sure the tip of the thermometer rests against the rectal wall for an accurate temperature reading. If the thermometer is inserted into a ball of manure, it may give you an inaccurate (low) temperature reading.
🐓Digital thermometers beep when they are done. Once you hear the beep simply read the display.

🐓The normal temperature range for an adult horse is between 37.0 - 38.5 degree Celsius.
🐓The normal temperature range for a foal is higher (37.5 - 38.9C).

🐓Temperature can be increased after exercise, with fear, pain or excitement and if there is illness or infection.

ā˜ŽļøIf your horse is showing any signs of illness with an elevated temperature - ensure to call your vet!
