From young Thoroughbreds preparing for their first trial to cherished geriatric paddock pets, routine dental care is a vital aspect of your horse’s overall wellbeing. At Ascot Equine Vets, we are fully equipped to provide thorough dental examinations and performance floating to ensure optimal oral health.
At our hospital and diagnostic centre, we have purpose built dental stocks to facilitate safe and efficient procedures. Alternatively, we can perform dental services at your property, depending on the available facilities.
Our dental examination begins with a full physical assessment, followed by the administration of a sedative in a safe and legal manner. This allows us to conduct a comprehensive oral exam while your horse is still standing, using a light and mirror to individually assess each tooth. We then float the teeth, addressing any sharp points as needed with precision power tools. Afterward, a detailed dental record and tailored future plan are provided for your horse’s ongoing needs.
Should any significant abnormalities be detected during the examination, we offer advanced diagnostic options, including digital radiography and referral for nuclear scintigraphy or head CT.
For tooth extractions, we can perform incisor extractions safely under sedation and local anaesthesia. For more complex cases, such as molar extractions, we collaborate with a veterinary dentist. Additionally, if the tooth cannot be easily removed orally and requires repulsion, we have a surgeon on standby to ensure the procedure is completed efficiently and safely.
