Dentistry

From the young Thoroughbred prepping for their first trial, to the geriatric paddock pet, we believe routine dental care is an important part of your horse’s wellbeing. At Ascot Equine Vets, we are fully equipped to offer your horse a thorough dental examination and performance floating. At our hospital and diagnostic centre, we have a purpose built dental stocks on-site to facilitate the procedure. Alternatively depending on your own facilities, we can also also perform dentals at your property.

Our routine dental examination firstly involves performing a full physical exam, followed by administering a sedative in a safe and legal manner. This allows a thorough oral examination to be performed in the standing horse, using a light and mirror, to ensure that each tooth is individually assessed. We then float your horse’s teeth, removing any sharp points as required, using power tools. After the examination and procedure, we will forward a dental record and future plan tailored to your horse’s individual requirements.

If any other significant abnormalities are detected on examination, we can further investigate with other imaging modalities, such as digital radiography or nuclear scintigraphy, if required. If tooth removal is recommended, oral extractions are performed safely under sedation and local anaesthetic to ensure a stress free experience for the horse, owner and vet!
